What does this mean to you?
Microsoft recently announced that support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 will end on January 14, 2020. As a Microsoft partner working on behalf of our clients we wanted to write a guide to help users understand what this means and what steps they need to take.
To begin with you need to establish if these changes will affect you. Many of our clients know which operating system they are using but for those who don’t you can right click on the ‘My PC’ or look in Control Panel > System and Security > System. You will see the operating system your computer is using.
If you would like us to carry out an audit of your existing PC’s and Servers, call us on 01473 211330.
What does it mean when Microsoft makes an End of Life Announcement?
Put simply, security patches and updates will no longer be provided, leaving servers running Windows Server 2008 and PC’s running Windows 7 vulnerable to security breaches.
What should you do?
We strongly recommend upgrading workstations and servers before the January 2020 deadline. It may be possible to simply upgrade the operating systems to Windows 10 and Server 2019. In-place upgrades are available for compatible servers and PC’s. However, for aged equipment, full replacement may be necessary.
When is the right time?
It’s true to say updating an IT infrastructure is a large task, even for a small firm, as we all rely on our technology, and the deadline will be here before you know it. Many organisations have chosen to start the upgrade process already as the whole process is likely to take time.
This is a great opportunity to make your IT work harder for you!
